Christmas #2: Preparations

Preparations for Christmas at Grammy's house started long ago, the day after Thanksgiving, when the children helped Grammy decorate her tree, and we all enjoyed the traditional post-holiday turkey noodle soup.
This is Mary's ornament-hanging stance...
(For the record, my kids also helped decorate my parents' tree. And undecorate it. Every day. Fortunately, my mom is very laid back about her Christmas tree. Phew!!)

The week before Christmas David and Mary and their cousins received a real post-marked letter from the North Pole. (Thanks, Aunt Le!) We were all very excited to read their letters from Santa, which assured them that Santa knew they were at Grammy's house this year and admonished them to stay on the nice list. (Uncle B also had a real heart-to-heart with the two boys about the importance of staying on the nice list. It worked like magic. I love this Santa stuff!)

Then, the day before Christmas Eve, guess who should coming knocking at Grammy's door?!

Why Mr. and Mrs. Claus, of course!
David, as the oldest and most outgoing cousin, was the first one up. I don't know why he has such a weird expression on his face. Maybe he was dazzled and/or in shock...
Next was Cousin J...
Then Cousin E, who stayed as far away as possible while tentatively reaching out for her gift...
Mary quickly snatched hers and ran away as quick as could be...
Baby N, of course, was as sweet as could be...
Me and my kiddos (enjoying their candy canes)...
And here is the whole gang who assembled at Grammy's house this year...
How lucky I was to be surrounded by so many loved ones! (Especially since THE loved one is missing.)

Later that evening the kids and I returned home to quickly finish up that project of mine, a memory game of the cousins for each family...

I had two little elves to help me with the finishing touches...

The next morning on Christmas Eve the kids and I baked a cake to share on Jesus' birthday. Then we decorated it. I made too much icing too runny and I let my kids sprinkle to their hearts' content. The result was a super sweet VOLCANO of Christmas joy. (When David realized he could have as much frosting and sprinkles as he wanted without limits, he exclaimed, "This is the best day ever!")

Then it started to snow! (I guess I was wrong about the first snow being the only snow.)
And then the snow started sticking!!
And so, with the beginnings of our Texas White Christmas Miracle, the preparations were complete, and we were ready to load up the car and drive to Grammy's house for the holiday festivities.
