The beginning of the end of The Wedding Day for our family was when David failed to catch Brittney's garter. I'm not sure my five-year-old son needed a piece of his aunt's underwear, but that's beside the point: He was devastated.
It was at that point that the waterfall of tears let loose.
Soon thereafter David looked down at his clothes, then looked up at me, and with pure disgust on his tear-streaked face, said, "I am still wearing these clothes! I have been wearing these clothes ALL DAY! Why am I still wearing these clothes?!!" (I decided not to point out that he was lucky he hadn't been required to wear even a tie, let alone a three-piece suit or mini-tux.)
It was at that point that we changed David and Mary into their pajamas and put them in the car.
It was at that point that David realized in horror, "The wedding was the WHOLE DAY!"
Me: "Yes, but it's over. And now we're taking Daddy to the airport, and then you can go to sleep."
David: "But the wedding took up the WHOLE DAY, and I didn't get to do anything I wanted!"
I tried pointing out all the fun with cousins he'd had that day, but it didn't provide much consolation.
David, crying: "That wedding was LONG!"
Greg: "I know. But a wedding doesn't have to be long. Yours can be short if you want."
David: "I can have a short wedding day?"
Me: "Yes. You get to decide how you want to celebrate your wedding, and it can be really short if you want."
David: "I want a short wedding."
Greg: "Okay."
David, with a wail: "But what if I FORGET I want a short wedding?"
Me and Greg: "Don't worry! We'll remind you!"
David: "But what if you forget to remind me?"
Me and Greg: "We won't forget!! We promise!"
David: "But what if you forget?"
Me: "David, I promise that when you are getting married we will remind you that when you were five years old you decided that you were going to have a short wedding. Trust me, David, we won't pass up the chance to remind you of this."
David: "How do you know you will remember?"
Me: "I'm going to type on my computer that you want a short wedding, and the words will always be there, and then everybody will remember that you want a short wedding."
David, finally consoled, "Okay."
So here is the OFFICIAL RECORD that David wants a short wedding.
By the way, when Grandma Evie asked David the morning after The Wedding Day how it was, David replied, "MY wedding is going to be SHORT!"
